  I Regain Confidence

I received a devastating blow to my self-confidence in the first interview of my college years. I applied to be a host in our Student Acting Troupe and felt confident that I would be accepted. But one of the panel members told me: "You seem inadequate and you are a little vertically-challenged." My life has never been the same since. I used bigger heels to complement my height and psychological maneuvers and tricks to hide my lack of confidence. But no matter how hard I tried to look the part, there was still something missing.

As president of English Club, I organized the rehearsal of Snow White for an English party. Unfortunately, we could not find an actor to be the last dwarf. It had to be someone who was humorous by nature and fluent in English. Suddenly, all eyes turned to me, and I knew I would have to be the dwarf. To my great surprise and delight, once on stage, I was totally absorbed in the performance and my humorous nature was put to full use. As the dwarf, I was a big hit.

Yes, each of us is only one among millions of others, but each of us is an individual and each of us is unique. Cultivating our individuality will transform our lives, making of them a kaleidoscope of new colors and textures.

A world deprived of diversity would be a bland and boring place. The real tragedy is not being short or shy or ugly, but having your identity lost in a world in which everyone is a clone of a model cool boy or a flawless charming girl.

Given a choice, I would rather be ugly than live in such a world. I'd rather be a genuine dwarf accompanying a Snow White than be a Snow White among nothing but Snow Whites. I would rather be myself. I would contribute my individual and unique colors to create a more diverse universe. Please, be yourself.

  East and West have met

runner-up: Rui Cheng gang, Foreign Affair College

  Honorable judges, ladies and gentlemen:

Kipling said:" East is east, and West is West, and never the twain shall meet!" But now, a century later, they have met.

They have met in business. They have met in education. They have met in the arts.

Some would argue that these meetings leave us with a choice between East and West ,but I believe the best future lies in the creative combination of both worlds. We can make Western ideas, customs and technology our own, and adapt them to our own use. We can enjoy the best of all worlds, because our tradition is, above all, one of selecting the best and making it our own.

But, do Western styles and values threaten our identity?

History makes it easy for us to think so-perhaps too easy.

Some people seem to think that adopting Western customs, such as a bride wearing white-which has long been a color of mourning in China, instead of the traditional Chinese red for her wedding, is another submission to foreign intervention,–a betrayal of our heritage, they say.

They fear that as we become "globalized", we will no longer be Chinese.

  I do not agree.

History teachers that a strong and confident nation is at ease in hearing from the outside world.

The wedding of Eastern and Western cultures, whether in white gowns or red, brings us variety.

It is a rich banquet of special foods from all over the world.

As an amateur gourmet of Chinese cuisine, our superb flavours delight me.

But my Chinese taste appreciates food from any land.

I even allow the convenience of McDonald's a place in my life without giving up my good taste.

My grandfather taught me to hum tunes of Beijing opera from the time I was very young; they are deep in my spirit, part of my soul.

I love Beijing opera, because it always reminds me of who I am.

But I am also a fan of modern pop music, the No.1 fan of Spice Girls on campus.

of course, it goes far beyond food, music and dance. It goes into values and ways of thinking about the world.

Once upon a time, or so my teacher told me, a Chinese boy and an American girl had a squabble.

Both wanted to keep a bunny rabbit they had found in the garden.

Surely you've seen a rabbit sunning himself in the grass.

Nothing is more lovable, nothing more natural. No wonder they wanted him. The Chinese boy played his er-hu. Happiness and joy, longing and passion, filled the air. The little rabbit swayed gently and began to move his ears in the direction of the music. He liked what he heard.

The girl then took out her violin and played it to produce beautiful melodies of her own.

The rabbit began to bounce in her direction.

So intent were the children on their own music that neither paid the other any attention.

The competing melodies confused the little rabbit and he did not know which way to turn .Unable to attract the little creature, both children gave up ;they walked away, in different directions, leaving the rabbit. . .alone.

But, what if they listened ,what if they really heard each other's music, instead of always playing their own tunes?

When I hear the music of a violin ,rich with the joys of men and women who came together and sang and danced.. . I hear echoes of the music of the grass lands, of the hills, of the rivers…of my own native land.

Is music mine and yours, or is it ours?

What I want to hear is the er-hu and the violin played together, in rhythm and in tune. Together, we can produce new and beautiful music, rich with textures and sounds that can only be made in harmony.

The rabbit sits in the grass in the ever-warming sun. Waiting for us to play, waiting for the symphony to begin.

Will he have to wait forever? The choice is ours . Thank you.

  Me and my Fears

Honorable judges, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen:

It is a great honor and pleasure to be here on this beautiful Saturday morning to share with you my sentiments about life and passion for the English language.

About a year and a half ago, I took part in my very first English Speech Contest. When I stood before the microphone with all eyes starring directly at me, I could hardly speak. I stood there, embarrassed and helpless, struggling in vain for the right thing to say. My fears had paralyzed me.

While my passion for English has never changed, I lost my courage to speak in public. When my professor again encouraged me to take part in this Competition, I said “no.” I couldn’t endure yet another painful experience. He looked me straight in the eye and said something that pierced my heart. I will never forget his words. “Look,” he said, “We all have our fears, and you have yours. You could twist your ankle in a basketball game, but then be afraid to ever play again. Running away can never dispel your fears, but action will. A winner is not one who never fails, but one who never quits.”

I spent a whole day with his words twisting and turning in my mind. Then I made the bravest and wisest decision of my life: I would face my fears – and take part in the competition!

As it turned out, my dear old professor was right. Now, here I am, once again standing before a microphone. My heart is beating fast, and my mouth is dry, but most importantly, I have faced my fears — and that makes all the difference!

  Thank you.

Hello, every!today I’m glad to give you a speech of “the youthdream”.

First I want to ask you some questions: Do you know what is youth? How do you master your youth? Different people may have different answers. In my eyes, youth is not rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees. It is a matter of the emotion: it is the freshness, it is the freshness of the deep spring of life.Martin Luther King had said:

I have a dream today. I have a dream that one day every vally shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight, and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together.

Wow, what a dream it has been for Martin Luther King. But the changing world seems telling me that people gradually get their dreams lost somehow in the process of growing up, and sometimes I personally find myself saying goodbye unconsciously to those distant childhood dreams.

However, we need dreams. They nourish our spirit; they represent possibility even when we are dragged down by reality. They keep us going. Most successful people are dreamers as well as ordinary people who are not afraid to think big and dare to be great. When we were little kids, we all dreamed of doing something big and splashy, something significant. Now what we need to do is to maintain them, refresh them and turn them into reality. However, the toughest part is that we often have no ideas how to translate these dreams into actions. Well, just start with concrete objectivity, we will make it.

Hold fast to dreams, for if dreams die, life is a broken-winged bird that cannot fly. Hold fast to dreams, for when dreams go, life is a barren field frozen with snow. So my dear friends, think of your old and maybe dead dreams. Whatever it is, pick it up and make it alive from today.

Time on housework will be rewarding Being gradually aware of the significance in children’s involving in housework, parents are changing from a role of overprotection to a more reasonable level of encouraging initiative participation in household chores.

It’s inspiring and meaningful to see that children are no longer deprived of their rights to develop practical skills in housework, instead, they are given the chances to contribute their shares and are often rewarded with a spiritual fulfillment. Fortunately, I’m one of the countless teenagers who have benefited a great deal from this kind of perceptual transition of our parents.

I have frequently been encouraged to deal with cooking the meal, sweeping the floor as well as washing dishes since an early age of seven. And I am proud enough to take the responsibility of pparing a good meal when Mom and Dad are delayed by their work.

Thanks to their early realization and ever-lasting persistence in the cultivation of my independence, I have grown more skillful and willing to take my share of obligation either at home or at school.

Pushing the children on their way to housework is initial yet effective if parents tend to ensure a promising future.

In the picture we can see that a man is fishing attentively by the lake.Behind him there is a scholar who is stealing the fish in the man’s bucket. It is obvious that the drawer of the picture tries to reveal a serious problemin the academic circle of our country — plagiarism. In recent years academiccheats have become rampant. Quite a lot of graduate students and scholars“use” others’ ideas, articles and papers without acknowledging the sourceof information. They copy them without the fear that they might be caught. For a long time we paid less attention to the problem of plagiarism, butnow we are increasingly aware of its negative effects. Plagiarists’misconduct simply mean “stealing” others’ intellectual and academicaccomplishments, which not only depreciates their own humanity but contaminatesthe climate of the academic circle. Academic falsification is like an epidemicdisease that spreads fast and will destroy the healthy development of academicstudies. What’s worse, these plagiarists have set a very disreputable exampleto the younger generation.

So what attitude should we hold towards it? From my point of view, weshould resolutely battle against this ill phenomenon. Education of moralityshould be strengthened among the scholars and students. Those who steal others’academic achievements should be given severe punishment whenever they arespotted. If necessary, we can resort to the law to protect the interest of theoriginal writer and inventor. We must recognize that fighting againstplagiarism requires our persistent efforts.

good morning ladies and gentlemen. today i’m very glad to be here with youto share my stories and opinions about reading. i love reading from the bottomof my heart. and i do learn a lot from books. i know the wonderful stories ofgreat heroes in history, secrets of nature, mysteries of ufo and our universe.to me , books are like a faithful friend, always around me , giving me enjoymentand wisdom. i remember when i was in primary school, ten or eleven years old, myfather borrowed some books from the library in his school. those were among thegreatest works of the world, including abrabian nights、the legend ofdeification, journey to the west, and the romance of the three kingdoms. thesebooks were all written in

ancient chinese characters but i tried to read the heavy books and weredeeply attracted. from then on, i spared every minute to read whatever i couldget. whenever i got a new book, i kept reading until i finished it despite timeand place. i read books even in class or just a few minutes before the exams. inmy mind, there is always an unforgettable scene: lying in bed, nervous butexcited, my friend and i read a book together in the weak light of a flashlight, with a quilt on us, in order not to be blamed by parents. all my classmatesthought i was crazy and gave me a nickname “bookworm”. so you can understand whyi got my eyes shortsighted.

till now, i still like reading as i used to. and i’m very

pleased to see that my ten-year-old son loves reading just like me. i havebought him many books. whenever you come into my home, you can find books inevery corner. but the place where my son and i enjoy reading most is in thetoilet. so it often happens in the morning: one is in the toilet readingsomething comfortably, while another

walking outside , shouting. for my age, i like to read magazines or shortstories to get relaxation as well as inspiration.

today we live in a world of prosperity. never before have we

faced so many temptation from the outside world. never before have we hadso many chances to enjoy our lives. we drive rather than walking; we go onlineto chat with people we’ve never met before instead of talking to friends aroundus. but there’s always something that cannot be replaced and forgotten., such asbooks. so i will allow myself to continue the journey in the ocean of booksuntil the very end of my life.

finally, i’d like to end my speech with a great philosopher, writer andthinker, francis bacon’s famous saying: reading makes a full man. studies servefor delight, for ornament, and for ability. thank you very much.

I still remember the Titanic, though it's a big ship but it still sunk,so ,in my opinion ,the best ship is the friendship.

Everyone needs friends because there are a lot of things that you can't deal with yourself, and the friends just make up for it.

Friendship just likes the sun ,it can make you fell warm though in the cold winter, friendship just likes the water in the desert ,it can make you fell that in the world ,there still has hope .in a word ,the friendship is the same meaning as the greatness ,selfless and devotion.

To make friends ,adding a friend equals adding a way ,open your heart ,devote yourself, let friendship make your world colourful.

With the development of the modern technology, private car is no longer a luxurious thing for ordinary people, more and more people drive to work instead of going by bus. The popularization of private car has many advantages.First, it is very convenient and time-saving ,you can drive your own car to the workplace instead of waiting for the crowded bus and afraid of being late for working.Second,it can also improve the traffic structure, and help to mitigate the stress of the traffic.Third, the popularization of private car can help to promote the car industry and any other interrelated industries. I believe that in the future the private car will become the most important vehicle and we cann't live without it.

  Good afternoon,ladies and gentlemen,

I’m Wang from Class x Grade x’s my pleasure to stand here today to talk about my school—Dalian No.9 Middle school.

Two years ago, when I first stepped into No.9 Middle school,I immediately fell in love with it. It is a beautiful buildings are new and the walls are covered with wild roses that dazzle theeyes in the bee-humming air. I’ve thought of it the grass turns green in the springtime, and how the mocking birds flutter their tails and sing, how the moon shines down on the building, how the Cuckoo Waltz rings out the precious short-lived hours, how the teenagers in bright summer dresses promenade the grassy lawn.

During these two years,my teachers have given me unconditional support, and have given their words of encouragement in good times and their words of consolation in difficult have always given me alittle more than I asked for and instilled in me the values and principles that govern my life ’s the teachers’ instruction here that tells me the art of living is to know when to hold fast and when to let rabbis of old put it this way “A man comes to the world with his fist clenched, but when he dies, his hand is open.” I’ve learned a lot from my classmates and friends,we have overcomed many have always been optimistic and my feet hurt, they all cared about me and some of them offered to help me up and down play together,we learn together and we grow up ’s the help between our classmates that tells me how to love my ver mean life is ,meet it and live ’s the school motto that tells me to improve myself, seek truth and develop innovations.

I love my school because of all this, besides, there is something more than I can say.

To end my speech ,let’s all give our best wishes to thefurther development of our campus! Thank you.

i have the answer to a question that we've all asked. the question is, why is it that the letter x represents the unknown? now i know we learned that in math class, but now it's everywhere in the culture — the x prize, the x-files, project x, tedx. where'd that come from?

about six years ago i decided that i would learn arabic, which turns out to be a supremely logical language. to write a word or a phrase or a sentence in arabic is like crafting an equation, because every part is extremely precise and carries a lot of information. that's one of the reasons so much of what we've come to think of as western science and mathematics and engineering was really worked out in the first few centuries of the common era by the persians and the arabs and the turks.

this includes the little system in arabic called al-jebra. and al-jebr roughly translates to “the system for reconciling disparate parts.“ al-jebr finally came into english as algebra. one example among many.

the arabic texts containing this mathematical wisdom finally made their way to europe — which is to say spain — in the 11th and 12th centuries. and when they arrived there was tremendous interest in translating this wisdom into a european language.

but there were problems. one problem is there are some sounds in arabic that just don't make it through a european voice box without lots of practice. trust me on that one. also, those very sounds tend not to be represented by the characters that are available in european languages.

here's one of the culprits. this is the letter sheen, and it makes the sound we think of as sh — “sh.“ it's also the very first letter of the word shalan, which means “something“ just like the the english word “something“ — some undefined, unknown thing.

now in arabic, we can make this definite by adding the definite article “al.“ so this is al-shalan — the unknown thing. and this is a word that appears throughout early mathematics, such as this 10th century derivation of proofs.

the problem for the medieval spanish scholars who were tasked with translating this material is that the letter sheen and the word shalan can't be rendered into spanish because spanish doesn't have that sh, that “sh“ sound. so by convention, they created a rule in which they borrowed the ck sound, “ck“ sound, from the classical greek in the form of the letter kai.

later when this material was translated into a common european language, which is to say latin, they simply replaced the greek kai with the latin x. and once that happened, once this material was in latin, it formed the basis for mathematics textbooks for almost 600 years.

but now we have the answer to our question. why is it that x is the unknown? x is the unknown because you can't say “sh“ in spanish. (laughter) and i thought that was worth sharing.

My name is , and we are pleased to be able to discuss the pursuit of excellence, dedication youth, this topic, I am going to talk about today is “willing to sacrifice, the fire ignited youth.”

Let the fire burn eternal youth, so that life lightning across the horizon, with all the enthusia in exchange for time, there is no end to the dream of youth! I really appreciate the “Agni youth,” these words inside, and has been encouraging with its own study, work and life. I think that youth should be burned, give off light only value! Burning of one’s life may also be corrupt, in that case, I do not want to corrupt, not corrupt, I would like to burn up! Friends present here! You like it?

Youth is our most beautiful season of life, she is breeding in early spring of life, demonstrating a warm summer, with autumn’s master real hidden, which makes clear the hope of winter, full of poetic passion and not a lack of hard work, fashion, romantic and full of the hard struggle. When a person’s youth integrate into an era, a career, so youth will not go away, and this will certainly cause in the years of experience in the reflection of bright light.

Alright, well I’ve been asked to talk about something beautiful and I’d like to choose the White Cloud Temple. It is located in Beijing and it’s on the west side of town. It’s not that far away from a subway station, but you would need to take a bus, because it’s a bit far to walk. I go there probably two or more times a year. It’s a Taoist temple, probably the most active Taoist temple in Beijing. I’m a Taoist. But I go there more than just to pray. I really try to take a trip to find some time to rediscover myself. During the Spring Festival people jam into it because they hold what I think is the best carnival during Spring Festival. We call them Miao Huis. At that time the temple is very crowded, but most other times it’s quite peaceful, and it’s a good place to get away from all the people.

I think the reason it’s so beautiful is because it is simple and it seems to blend in well with its environment. The small praying hall is very serene. It has a nice pool and a bridge. The Taoist motifs are quite simple but I think they are very charming. I love to go there during the winter after a big snowfall because it’s at this time that it seems to be most mysterious. I choose this as the most beautiful because, to me, beauty is simplicity and natural design, and it also means it fits the environment it is in. I don’t really like grand, elaborate temples. I prefer temples that seem powerful not because of their structures but because they are perfect for their simple beauty.

A general dictionary defines teamwork as a "Cooperative or coordinated effort on the part of a group of persons acting together as a team or in the interests of a common cause unison for a higher cause people working together for a selfless purpose and so on."Applied to workplaces teamwork is a method that aligns employee mindsets in a cooperative and usually selfless manner towards a specific business purpose.

Today there is no business or organization that does not talk about the need and value of teamwork in the workplace. While the concept of teamwork and its benefits are well known and talked about it is very rare to see it being practiced truly in reality. And you may have often noticed what appears outwardly as teamwork is not really teamwork internally. Some things cannot be accomplished by people working individually. Larger more ambitious goals usually require that people work together with other people. Because of this teamwork is a desired goal of many businesses and organizations today. Projects often require that people work together in order to accomplish a common goal. Although critics often argue that in the corporate world teamwork has become an empty buzzword or a form of corporate-speak. Effective collaborative skills are necessary to work well in a team environment. As businesses and organizations become larger or more sophisticated. Many employers attempt to enhance their employees' collaborative efforts through training cross-training and workshops in order to help people effectively work together in a cohesive group and accomplish shared goals.

Human beings are fiercely independent animals and we will always have our own opinions and independent methods of doing something. This is the way our minds are hardwired by nature. Except for a very small percentage of us sharing and collaboration with others is not exactly programmed inside each and every one of us. This is because each person is mainly concerned about his or her rewards appreciation need for power over others and so on. But teamwork is a different ballgame that aligns mindsets in a cooperative and usually selfless manner towards a specific business purpose. And it involves sacrifices sharing of rewards sharing the blame and punishments true uniformity suppression of personal opinions etc. which is not very palatable to many. It is always "What is in it for me" rather than "What is in it for us.

In order for teamwork to succeed one must be a teamplayer. A Teamplayer is one who subordinates personal aspirations and works in a coordinated effort with other members of a group or team in striving for a common goal. Businesses and other organizations often go to the effort of coordinating team building events in an attempt to get people to work as a team rather than as individuals.

A 20xx national representative survey HOW-FAIR revealed that Americans think that 'being a team player' was the most important factor in getting ahead in the workplace. This was ranked higher than several factors including 'merit and performance' 'leadership skills' 'intelligence' 'making money for the organization' and 'long hours'.

“The old structures are being reformed. As organizations seek to become more flexible in the face of rapid environmental change and more responsive to the needs of customers they are experimenting with new team-based structures”.

Good morning.Ladies and gentlemen, it's my honor to be here today to give you this speech. My name is Coco. I'd like to talk about job satisfaction. I have divided my talk into three parts:firstly, the importance of job satisfaction; secondly, the factors of job satisfaction;finally, how to achieve job satisfaction.

Now, let's start with the first part: the importance of job satisfaction.

A job provides an individual with the necessary means to remain satisfied in almost every aspect of life such as leisure, health and social life.Several key factors are thought to be critical for an employee to achieve job satisfaction.

Let's turn to the second part: the factors of job satisfaction. A reasonable salary is of course the most important factor in job satisfaction. In many people's minds,an ideal job is first of all a well-paid one, which makes the employee feel that he is fairly rewarded for what he has done for the company.Another important element of job satisfaction is the nature of the job itself. Job satisfaction can never be achieved if the employee's education , skills and interests. Finally, job satisfaction is closely associated with being part of the decision-making process in the company as well as having opportunities for promotion.

Let's leave that there, now, let's come to the last part: how to achieve job satisfaction. for an individual employee, finding the right job and trying to stay positive might be the first step towards achieving job fulfillment and satisfaction.

I'll briefly summarize the main parts. Let me just run over the key points again. Firstly, the importance of job satisfaction;secondly,.the factors of job satisfaction;finally, how to achieve job satisfaction.

In conclusion, job satisfaction plays an important role in the company and individual. It is the key index to influence the company performance. So we should try our best to achieve it.

Hello everyone,I'm .My topic is "we should protect earth". As we all notice, the weather becomes very odd recently. In a month like now,it should be quite warm, but I'm still wearing my winter dresses. It's still rather cold, which shouldn't happen at this season. In summer it's extremely cold while terribly hot in winter. All these factors make earth a unfavourible place to live in. here you can show some pictures or other materials you have collected. We all know that earth is our common mother.

We all live in it.She provides us everyting we need. She has been enormously generous to us.We should do our best to care for her. Now before it's too late,I think we should start to take actions.Protect the earth starting from you and me,from what we can do ourselves. For instance,ALWAYS throw rubbish in the bin and etc. Besides,we should try our best to know more about environment protection knowledge. The bad weather has made us suffer a lot.I believe everyone here has the same feeling as mine.I guess that's the price we paid for doing harm to the earth. We have nobody but ourselves to blame for that. At last, have you seen the movie"the day after tommorrow".It's a movie about weather. It's a good one and worth to have a look. thank you!

Obsolete equipment、industrial fuel burning and manufacturing operations are high likely to emit much wasted air.Thirdly, across our society ,relevant protection awareness has not built up.Just for the sake of convience to go out, people rely more and more on travelling and working by car while car is the main cause for smog.

To settle this problem,a series of meaures should be taken as follows.Primarily,we should establish a sound control system of smog. Not only can environmental protection departments strengthen air monitor, but government should enact more strict laws and regulations. Moreover,Reduce pollution sources is the fundamental solution to cut air pollutants. For example,we can reduce the amount of fuel vehicles or close down high polluting enterprises.Developing green and energy-saving energy can lower the emission of smog.Last but not least, People should do personal protection. They need to reduce the time for outdoor sports and pay attention to rest in smog days.Everyone all over the country should take measures to reduce the smog weather. We can use more public transport such as the bus and the underground so that the number of cars will be limited. Also, people should plant more trees. As far as I’m concerned ,if we work together to do such measures ,smog weather will vanish completely and we will get clear and blue sky.

thanksgiving day is the most truly american of the national holidays in the united states and is most closely connected with the earliest history of the country.

in 1620, the settlers, or pilgrims, they sailed to america on the may flower, seeking a place where they could have freedom of worship. after a tempestuous two-month voyage they landed at in icy november, what is now plymouth, massachusetts.

during their first winter, over half of the settlers died of[1] starvation or epidemics. those who survived began sowing in the first spring.

all summer long they waited for the harvests with great anxiety, knowing that their lives and the future existence of the colony depended on the coming harvest. finally the fields produced a yield rich beyond expectations. and therefore it was decided that a day of thanksgiving to the lord be fixed[2]. years later, president of the united states proclaimed the fourth thursday of november as thanksgiving day every year. the celebration of thanksgiving day has been observed on that date until today.

the pattern of the thanksgiving celebration has never changed through the years. the big family dinner is planned months ahead. on the dinner table, people will find apples, oranges, chestnuts, walnuts and grapes. there will be plum pudding, mince pie, other varieties of food and cranberry juice and squash. the best and most attractive among them are roast turkey and pumpkin pie. they have been the most traditional and favorite food on thanksgiving day throughout the years.

everyone agrees the dinner must be built around roast turkey stuffed with a bread dressing[3] to absorb the tasty juices as it roasts. but as cooking varies with families and with the regions where one lives, it is not easy to get a consensus on[4] the precise kind of stuffing for the royal bird.

thanksgiving today is, in every sense, a national annual holiday on which americans of all faiths and backgrounds join in to express their thanks for the year' s bounty and reverently ask for continued[5] blessings.

In today’s fast-paced world and with the booming economy, stress is our constant companion. We may face stress from our jobs, families, peers, etc. Though stress adds flavor and challenge to life, too much stress can seriously affect people’s physical and mental well-being, so it is necessary to handle stress properly.

When it comes to reducing stress, people vary in their ways. Some people talk with someone, perhaps a friend or a family member, about their anxieties and worries. Others allow themselves a mental “get-away”: a quiet country scene painted mentally can pert them from the tension of a stressful situation to a more relaxing frame of mind. There are also people who create a sense of peace by reading a good book.

The effective way to relieve stress for me is different from those mentioned above. I have several relaxation techniques. For examples, when stress occurs, I would take a deep breath and exhale and if possible, I would take a warm bath. They prove to be very helpful. They help me to calm down my mind and improve my response.

Over the next five minutes, my intention is to transform your relationship with sound. Let me start with the observation that most of the sound around us is accidental, and much of it is unpleasant. (Traffic noise) We stand on street corners, shouting over noise like this, and pretending that it doesn't exist. Well, this habit of suppressing sound has meant that our relationship with sound has become largely unconscious.

There are four major ways sound is affecting you all the time, and I'd like to raise them in your consciousness today. First is physiological. (Loud alarm clocks) Sorry about that. I've just given you a shot of cortisol, your fight/flight hormone. Sounds are affecting your hormone secretions all the time, but also your breathing, your heart rate — which I just also did — and your brainwaves.

It's not just unpleasant sounds like that that do it. This is surf. (Ocean waves) It has the frequency of roughly 12 cycles per minute. Most people find that very soothing, and, interestingly, 12 cycles per minute is roughly the frequency of the breathing of a sleeping human. There is a deep resonance with being at rest. We also associate it with being stress-free and on holiday.

The second way in which sound affects you is psychological. Music is the most powerful form of sound that we know that affects our emotional state. (Albinoni's Adagio) This is guaranteed to make most of you feel pretty sad if I leave it on. Music is not the only kind of sound, however, which affects your emotions.

Natural sound can do that too. Birdsong, for example, is a sound which most people find reassuring. (Birds chirping) There is a reason for that. Over hundreds of thousands of years we've learned that when the birds are singing, things are safe. It's when they stop you need to be worried.

The third way in which sound affects you is cognitively. You can't understand two people talking at once ("If you're listening to this version of") ("me you're on the wrong track.") or in this case one person talking twice. Try and listen to the other one. ("You have to choose which me you're going to listen to.")

We have a very small amount of bandwidth for processing auditory input, which is why noise like this — (Office noise) — is extremely damaging for productivity. If you have to work in an open-plan office like this, your productivity is greatly reduced. And whatever number you're thinking of, it probably isn't as bad as this. (Ominous music) You are one third as productive in open-plan offices as in quiet rooms. And I have a tip for you. If you have to work in spaces like that, carry headphones with you, with a soothing sound like birdsong. Put them on and your productivity goes back up to triple what it would be.

The fourth way in which sound affects us is behaviorally. With all that other stuff going on, it would be amazing if our behavior didn't change. (Techno music inside a car) So, ask yourself: Is this person ever going to drive at a steady 28 miles per hour? I don't think so. At the simplest, you move away from unpleasant sound and towards pleasant sounds. So if I were to play this — (Jackhammer) — for more than a few seconds, you'd feel uncomfortable; for more than a few minutes, you'd be leaving the room in droves. For people who can't get away from noise like that, it's extremely damaging for their health.

And that's not the only thing that bad sound damages. Most retail sound is inappropriate and accidental, and even hostile, and it has a dramatic effect on sales. For those of you who are retailers, you may want to look away before I show this slide. They are losing up to 30 percent of their business with people leaving shops faster, or just turning around on the door. We all have done it, leaving the area because the sound in there is so dreadful.

I want to spend just a moment talking about the model that we've developed, which allows us to start at the top and look at the drivers of sound, analyze the soundscape and then predict the four outcomes I've just talked about. Or start at the bottom, and say what outcomes do we want, and then design a soundscape to have a desired effect. At last we've got some science we can apply. And we're in the business of designing soundscapes.

Just a word on music. Music is the most powerful sound there is, often inappropriately deployed. It's powerful for two reasons. You recognize it fast, and you associate it very powerfully. I'll give you two examples. (First chord of The Beatles' "A Hard Day's Night") Most of you recognize that immediately. The younger, maybe not. (Laughter) (First two notes of "Jaws" theme) And most of you associate that with something! Now, those are one-second samples of music. Music is very powerful. And unfortunately it's veneering commercial spaces, often inappropriately. I hope that's going to change over the next few years.
